Greyson First Week

I arrived in South Africa Friday before last and it took a few days before I didn't have to take a nap in the middle of the day. Inbev put us up in this place called the Muco Guesthouse which was a great little place to stay with very friendly people among both the staff and the guests. It was walking distance from Rivonia Village, a little mall area with food and shopping.

Inbev got us tickets to Castle Lite Unlocks on Monday, which had food, drinks, and performances by various artists, as well as a few interviews with the artists. It was really fun and I got to try two different cocktails made with Castle Lite (A mojito and a ginger twist), as well as a regular Castle Lite draught. We had a ton of fun and there were a bunch of people there.

During our first week, we were stationed at one of the offices in Sandton, and given a variety of different resources to begin studying for our projects. On Wednesday, we went to a different office and got to participate in some budget meetings, including getting to create and present excel documents about the predicted savings of two different projects. That was really cool because even though it didnt align with the projects we'll be working on for the majority of our time here, this little side project let us work with one of the engineers and present work that was almost entirely ours on only our second day there.

After this day long trip we went back to the first office and kept studying our project material. I am going to be working on Co-gen at the Rosslyn plant focusing on some solar panels that are being put in at the plant. I haven't been informed what exactly I am supposed to do in regards to the power plant, but have managed to get a decent grasp on the information so far through a mix of documents sent to me by Inbev and my own research. I also read through some of the basic material that Nozomi got on CIPs so that I could get a decent understanding of what he is doing, though it does not overlap with my project.

After work each day we've been going to the Inbev bar and trying the different beers they produce. So far I've tried the Black Label, Leffe, Brutal Fruit, Castle Lager, Castle Milk Stout, and even Castle Chocolate Milk Stout, which is no longer commercially available, and they've all been great. The beer is complementary at the bar so I've been able to try beers that I otherwise might have passed over.

On Saturday one of the guys from the office took us out with some of his friends to go hiking at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, which was really fun. We got to see the waterfall there and see some fantastic views along the hike. We then went to Neighborgoods Market which is an open air market that primary sells food but also has some clothing and other trinkets sold at stalls. I got a beef wrap and a ginger lemonade, both of which were very good. We also got to try a few samples of things like flavored honey and alcoholic ice cream. It was all very good. Saturday afternoon our coworker took us up to Rosslyn to drive by the plant, drive through a township, and then finally try a Braai with sausage and steak. It was a really fun experience.

On Sunday we moved to Utopia Guesthouse which is closer to the Rosslyn plant and we got settled in for the next few weeks. We didnt do much on Sunday besides pack up, move, and unpack so it was kind of a rest day after the week. This week we're starting at the plant which means going through some safety training and getting to meet the people who will be our primary help on our projects. Ill update next weekend on what it has been like at the plant.
